Don't let the bed bugs bite

This article looks at bed bug, prevention and control methods for your home and business.

According to the press there is officially a bed bug epidemic. Not only in hotels, motels and hostels, but in high end stores and businesses too, no one is exempt from these wee creatures. The USA is having a tough time dealing with them, and with every new day comes a new bed bug invasion story. Bed bugs really are taking over the country', Critter Crisis. The Bed Bug Epidemic' and Bed bug panic in New York!.

This has got me wondering what we are actually dealing with here. Apple seed sized bugs or an Alien invasion? In true American style we have been exposed to overly dramatic titles and scare mongering tactics that will have the entire population fretting over the possibility of being the next victim. In my search for information I even came across a bed bug registry. The site asks people in the US to log bedbug problems and they are then plotted on a map. Apparently the site has seen a large peak in traffic since the US Bed Bug epidemic with many people becoming far warier of the little critters.

While here in the UK we have not seen quite the same velocity of bed bugs we must be wary that at any stage this could happen to us. It is with this in mind I have put together a series of prevention and control methods for reference in case you find yourself the next victim of the bed bug invasion.

First of all I will begin with the initial signs of bed bugs. Obviously live sightings are an indication of the problem or cast nymphal skins. Bed bugs also have a distinctive sickly sweet smell and may leave small dark spots on sheets and bedding.

While bed bugs are difficult to prevent there are ways you can minimise your risk. Bed bugs are commonly spread via travel. When travelling and staying in hotels it is advisable to do a quick spot check to establish if there is an obvious bed bug problem, if you believe there is a problem it is advised that you notify the hotel and request a room change. While bed bugs live in beds and bedding they are often also living in carpets, under skirting boards, underlays and in cracked and broken plaster. It is for this reason that it is also suggested that you keep your luggage in a wardrobe or on a table etc rather then on or under a bed.

If you have the unfortunate situation of picking up bed bugs while travelling, it is recommended that you isolate any items you think may have been affected and wash them thoroughly in hot water. This should hopefully kill any bed bugs on the items and stop the spread in its tracks. If you are unable to prevent the spread in time and believe you have brought the infestation into your home, it is important you seek professional advice as bed bugs are not a problem that can be sufficiently dealt to DIY. There are different treatment options available for bed bug problems, the most effective being Entotherm heat treatment. For details on the best way to deal with your bed bug problem contact a professional pest control company.
