Don't Be A Target! Protect Your Home And Family With A Deadbolt

Thieves typically like to spend less than 60 seconds breaking into a home

. The longer they have to spend trying to gain entry, the higher the risk of getting caught.

The proper lock for your door increases the amount of time a burglar spends trying to get into your home. Schlage locks are built to resist crowbars, saws and lock picks, thus slowing the burglar down. When they cannot gain entry to your home quickly, a burglar will generally move on to an easier target.

Knowledge is the key to protecting your home from break-ins and worse. The types of locks that are used on many homes include spring bolt locks. These locks are not as secure due to the way they work. The latch is connected to a spring and they can be moved without turning the key cylinder. Using a deadbolt requires the cylinder inside the key slot to rotate fully to disengage the lock.

Schlage locks include three types that will provide more security for your home.

Single cylinder deadbolts must be locked and unlocked from the outside using a key. The inside has a metal latch that can be used for locking and unlocking the door. This is one of the most commonly used types and is preferred because it requires a key to be used from the outside and is easily opened from the inside.

Double cylinder deadbolts are another type that many people prefer. The double cylinder lock requires a key to lock and unlock the door - from the inside and the outside. The benefit of security plus getting people in the habit of locking the door when they close it is why this type is often preferred. They are used more often in doors that contain glass. Even if the glass is broken, the door cannot be opened without a key. This provides time to call for help.

The third type - keyless entry deadbolts - do not require a key to lock or unlock the door. There is a keypad with numbers that allows users to put in a code to lock and unlock the door. The benefit associated with this type is you do not have to worry about losing your key or locking it inside the home. They often have remote controls that can be used to access the home and some have a key that can be used to override the lock. This type of lock is a bit more expensive than the single cylinder and double cylinder locks, but it does provide convenience as well as security.
