Dont Be Fear And Be Strong-spirited Away
I watched the anime Spirited Away once again
I watched the anime Spirited Away once again. The animation is life-like and fluid, with realistic nuances in character movements. It is definitely not a scary movie, and maybe somewhat bored to some people. But to people who like Hayao Miyazakis animations, it will be something that they dont want to miss.
The level of quality of movies from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli never let us down. The artwork is lavish and vibrant, featuring stunning depictions of the fantasy world in which Chihiro finds herself.
Spirited Away opens with Chihiro and her parents are on the way to their new home when her father tries to take a shortcut through the woods to get to their new house faster. They stumble across a mysterious tunnel. Despite Chihiros misgiving they explore the other side and find what the father believes to be an abandoned theme park. Actually, it is secretly inhabited by spirits who sleep by day and appear at night.
When Chihiros mother and father eat food from a restaurant in the street, angry spirits turns them into pigs. Furthermore, a wide sea has appeared between the spirit world and the human one, trapping Chihiro, the sole human, in a land of spirits. Luckily for her though, a mysterious boy named Haku appears, claiming to know her from the past. Under his instructions, Chihiro secures a job in the bathhouse where Haku works. With only her courage and some new found friends to aid her, Chihiro embarks on a journey to turn her parents back to their original forms and return home.
The plot is pretty simple. The whole story goes on a quiet, subdued way of telling a simple story about a simple girl in a very strange world. So instead of expecting something huge and exciting, you can sit back, watch, and appreciated the world and story Miyazaki has finely crafted for us to enjoy.
Not all of the characters in the film are fascinating as Yubaba, but the majority of them are as well designed and interesting. Chihiro/Sen is challenging herself from a spoiled crybaby, to a girl who can deal with situations no matter how daunting they may seem and find her courage.
Haku is definitely an appealing character in the movie. As main male lead, he doesnt appear in enough scenes, but hes a cool apprentice sorcerer with more than a few mysteries about him.
Kamaji, the spider-like boilerman is another memorable creation in this movie. Besides the fascinating and impressive character design, he has more than rudimentary knowledge of both magic and the bathhouse, and a heart of gold within his gruff exterior, making him one of Chihiro's strongest allies within the bathhouse. Lin is Chihiros another important friend in the film. She is a very good big sister character, crabbily likable rather than soft and gooey.
And the other good portrayal of the characters is that it lacked any clear good or evil characters, which is also one of my favorite part of the movie. Everyone has a bit of both, though perhaps some allow the evil sides of them to come out a bit more obviously than others.
One the most important factor of Miyazakis anime movies successful is the music by composer Jo Hisaishi. Just like the storyline, Jo Hisaishis music style is very simple, but he makes every note count. Most of his music is quite subdued in nature and takes a careful ear to notice when your eyes are being captivated by what's going on in the screen, but do take notice if you have the chance. The soundtrack is available online in many places, and I highly recommend getting one.
As Spirited Away released in Japan in July 2001, it drew an audience of around 23 million and revenues of approximately $300 million. It is the highest-grossing film in Japanese history, even surpassing the film Princess Mononoke for highest grossing animated motion pictures.
Spirited Away was dubbed into English by Walt Disney Pictures, under the supervision of Pixars John Lasseter, and was released in US on September 20, 2002. The film was the first film to have earned $200 million at the worldwide box office before opening in the US.
Though you can find some flaws while you are watching this movie, but it is really an excellent animate movie that worth watching. Enjoy!
