Dont Sacrifice Space Go For Built-in Appliances

How on earth did we all manage before all our major electrical appliances and white goods were designed for built-in convenience?

The answer was, with some difficulty. Many people with long memories will recall the old top-loading washing machines which entailed a massive effort to lift laundry into (and especially out of) them. Of course, the other problem with such machines was that, if they needed to be used regularly, they couldnt be stored away under a work surface, as that meant the inconvenience of a lot of pulling and pushing.

But just look how things have changed. Built-in washing machines now have handy front-loading doors, which cleverly minimise the amount of space needed for loading them. And going a step further, many top manufacturers also let us buy washing machines with integral doors, which encase all their controls and allow them to be concealed when not in use.

A newer appliance, the dishwasher, has also become a great labour-saving kitchen essential. Standing over a sink for what seemed like hours doing the washing and drying-up after a meal was the bane of many peoples lives. But now, most kitchens have room for one. The beauty of a built-in dishwasher, of course, is that all the workings are conveniently hidden away, and its literally a case of switch it on and forget about it.

The first big appliance to become a common fixture in a built-in kitchen was, of course, the cooker. Now, hobs and ovens which match the rest of a kitchens dcor are often taken for granted. Apart from saving valuable room, opting for a built-in cooker also does away with that most unpleasant of cleaning tasks getting down on your hands and knees to eliminate marks and remnants of food yuk!

Speaking of getting rid of kitchen nasties, a built-in cooker hood makes short work of any lingering cooking smells, which is an especially useful feature when the kitchen also incorporates the family dining area.

Now the rest of our kitchen appliances have joined the trend for built-in convenience. A built-in fridge-freezer adds another touch of style to a kitchen. It too can be safely hidden behind cabinet doors which match the others in the room, so avoiding breaking up the uniformity of the kitchens design.
