When looking for door hardware, it's tempting to just set a small budget for yourself and to refuse to go over it. When you do this, you do ensure that you don't spend an arm and a leg on your new door, on replacing your doorknob, on replacing your locks, but should price really be your only consideration? Let's look at some other factors that weigh into the equation when it comes to cost versus quality.

Safety

With the bargain bin deadlock, do you really think you're getting the same level of security you'd get with something a little more heavy duty? A lock that's cheaply made can be easily broken. A chain made of cheap materials can be easily snapped. If you buy the cheapest lock on the market, you may save a few bucks right now, but you may lose a lot of money in property to thieves later on down the line.

Durability

The cheapest available door, something made of pine or a wood that's just plain not very durable is going to warp very quickly. This isn't to say that the most expensive doors are the ones that you can really count on to last, but the cheapest ones are almost certain the ones that you can't. The same goes for locks and doorknobs. You want something that was made to a certain standard of quality so that you only have to buy it once. A cheap doorknob that you have to replace three times in a row is costing you the same as one that costs three times as much but never needs replacing. Look for something that will last.

Resell Value

This is where aesthetics come in. A beautiful brass doorknob improves resell value. An oak door with frosted windows improves resell value. In this sense, every dollar you spend on your door hardware can be three or four dollars earned on the sale price of your home. It's surprising how far these little things go when reselling a house, but you can nearly double your home's value without spending more than a month's pay on fixing it up. Of course, if you don't plan on reselling the home, then you have a whole other reason to look for an aesthetic pleasing doorknob or lock: because you want your home to look nice. If you're going to spend your there, why settle for something that isn't quite what you want?

So, with all this in mind, is price really a consideration? Yes, it's still a factor, but as we see, spending a little more up front can save, or even earn you money in the long run. The way to narrow your choices down is simple. First, make a list (mentally or on paper) of all the doors or knobs or locks or other hardware you're considering, narrow it down to say, three or four of your top selections, and then buy the cheapest of the lot if you can't decide. Price does matter, sure, but it's not the only consideration to make when improving your home's value.
