Door Safety Designs
Doors are a very important component of a structure
. Without doors, natural openings or entrance points cannot be closed if not in use, and dust particles, insects, and strong wind will be free to penetrate the house or building structure. However, doors can be injurious if not designed properly and with adequate austerity measures. In fact, about 300,000 injuries due to door accidents are recorded every year in the US, causing a lot of lawsuits filed against structure owners.
A door must be designed with safety considerations. Door accidents may vary from simple destruction of objects by strong impact of opening or closing to dangerous crushing of fingers either at the hinged side or at the free side during swing. Some doors are easily penetrated by fire pressure and smoke during fire incident, allowing further damage in the structure.
These accidents can be prevented by designing the door right. Esthetic consideration may come next to safety. In fact, most safety measures result in a visually attractive design of doors. Door safety measures depend on where the door is to be located. Some structures, such as theatres, have separate doors for entrance and exit. In such cases, traffic is expected to flow in one direction, and accidents might happen if someone attempts to go the opposite way.
Doors at heavy traffic entrance should be designed to open inwards from the room. This will prevent accidental hitting of a person near the door. If
entry doors are designed otherwise, doorstops can also be installed to protect any destruction. A maximum 40 tons per square meter of pressure of a swinging door can crush any object hit by the panel or trapped along the side.
However, if any of these preventive measures cant be applied, a glass door can be used so that movement of people on the other side can be seen before entering or leaving. If such a design is not applicable for
entry doors, particularly for private offices, a small window can be provided on the upper half of the door.
Finger trapping is the most common type of door accident. This normally involves young children, and it usually happens at home. Door guards can be installed to prevent such a painful accident. Some doors are designed with springs that slow down the closing and opening of
entry doors.
