. Constructed in 1440 this mansion has been occupied by the present family for more than 400 years. The atmosphere of years past seems to linger in the rooms of Dorney Court with its 15th and 16th century oak furniture and elegant lacquer furniture dating to the 17th century. The adjoining St. James Church dating to the13th century also impresses with its Tudor tower and Norman front; this church also is open to visitors.
The residence of the Palmer family for over 450 years, the property has been passed from father to son through the generations. A Grade 1 listed edifice, it has been identified as having exceptional historical and architectural value. As mentioned in the Domesday Book Dorney Court has been present as Dorney villages manor house for many centuries.
Accessible to members of the public from the year 1981, a considerable amount of work has been completed in the restoration and preservation of the historic building and surrounding gardens. The consistent interest shown by visitors from around the world has been instrumental in this endeavor. The mansion depicts the development of the gentry in the country life of England; the family portraits, furniture and needlework are of special interest.
Dorney is renowned for its honey, and in fact the name is the ancient term for island of bees. The production of honey continues to the present day. Dorney Court also has the distinction of producing Britains first pineapple, which was gifted in 1661 to Charles II.
In the period of late April to late May Dorney Court sells homegrown asparagus from the back entrance of the mansion. Usually picked early in the morning, the produce is usually sold out by afternoon.
A premier standard horticultural centre known as the Walled Garden Centre located on the premises provides light lunches and cream teas the year round.
