Submitting your website to the top Web Directory Listing sites is an important online marketing strategy from the point of view of the search engines like, Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. This is because by doing so you make your sites more visible to these search engines which will include your site in their book of site indexes. And which in turn will make your sites visible to the ultimate target your prospective customers or other human targets who will stumble upon your site by typing the keywords relevant to your site. But you need to know the proper Dos & Donts of directory submission to ensure your website is registered properly.
Dos
1) Choose a CATEGORY while doing submission.
Make sure you register your website under the most appropriate Category and Subcategory which is something only you can decide. Otherwise, your site may be rejected because of wrong submission under wrong Category and Subcategory.
2) Give a descriptive TITLE.
The title (of few words) may contain the official name of your site and words relevant to the theme of your site. Do not include any promotional language in the title.

Microsoft Corporation: Cloud Computing, Software, Online Games, IT Business Technology, Smart phones and Entertainment
"Oracle | Hardware and Software, Engineered to Work Together"

3) Give a DESCRIPTION for your site.
Type out a brief description of your site (25-30 words). The description must contain some (key) words relevant to the theme of your site. The Search Engines like such descriptions. Here too avoid promotional language!
For example:
Solve problems quickly with help from experienced users and the Microsoft community.
"Oracle engineers hardware and software to work together in the cloud and in your data center."
4) Enter all the possible KEYWORDS relevant to your site.
Some Free Directory Listing site may ask you to input some keywords, so be ready with all the relevant keywords or key phrases.
5) Enter your EMAIL ADDRESS.
6) Go for Reciprocal Directory Listing
This way you can have your site and that of the Web Directory Listing site link back to each other. This is also another way of attracting the attention of Google.
7) Also go for Featured Directory List
This involves paid submission of your site to directories. For the paid service, your site will be approved quickly & will exist in the Directory for a long period (for more than 2 years). Search engines rates backlinks very highly.
Donts
1.Don't submit sites consisting largely of affiliate links.
2.Do not submit a site which is "under construction".
3.Do not submit any site with an address that redirects to another address.
4.Do not add mirror sites.
5.Do not submit an URL that contains only the same or similar content as other sites you may have listed in the directory.
6.Do not disguise your submission and submit the same URL more than once.
Example: http://webdirectorydatabase.com & http://webdirectorydatabase/index.html.
Finally
If you fail to follow the guidelines of any Human Directory Listing sites or if register your site under some wrong category then there is a possibility of your site being rejected. Whether rejected or approved youll be informed about it through email. Unfortunately you may or maynt be informed about this. Besides you may have to wait for 2-3 months to see if its approved or not.
