What's the best way to store medicines? Does putting it in the fridge extend the expiry date?
The best way is to follow the instructions on the label, the packaging or the product insert. Most drugs should be kept in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight; while others need to be refrigerated.
Storing medicines in the fridge does not prolong the expiry date. This is because the expiry date is determined during the R&D phase and the effectiveness of the medicine will drop after the specified period, regardless of whether it is being refrigerated.
Is it safe to follow the expiry date stated or does it only apply if the packaging has not been opened?
Medicines that are still in their original packaging and not opened can be kept till the expiry date if the recommended storage conditions are followed. However, certain medicines are prescribed for use within a certain period of time. Some examples include antibiotic syrup, eye drops and antiseptic solutions. Any unused portion should be discarded once the specified treatment period is over.
What should one do with leftover medicines?
They should be discarded because used medicines (opened bottles) tend to have a shelf life that is shorter than what is stated on the bottle or packaging.

The most common signs and symptoms are itch, rashes on the body, as well as swelling around the eyes and lips.
