Double Storey Homes: A No For The Elderly
Most people would love to have a double storey home
. If they had the means for it, they wouldn't hesitate to build a big home. This will require them to have more finances ready though, once they'd decided on building one. The lot doesn't need to be as big as what would be required for a single storey dwelling thereby making it less expensive. In the end, most of the money that's going to be spent will be for the structure itself.
Young couples or families who are just starting to grow find
double storey homes attractive. For the elderly, however, it may be a completely different story. Younger couples and their kids don't find the sheer size of the house or its design a challenge to their bodies. After all, their legs and knees are still strong enough to make the distance between the bedrooms and the living and dining rooms and dealing with the stairs is not a tedious task at all. In actual fact, they may find the huge interior a perfect aid in losing weight.
The elderly, of course, no longer have the same strength and agility that they used to have in their younger years. For those who are already in their eighties, a single step or two may already be quite a challenge. Because of this, homes with two levels will be really difficult for them to live in. A spacious interior may be enjoyable for those who still have the capability to move around quickly. For the elderly however, this is nothing but a trial for their weak bodies.
There is one major trouble that awaits the elderly in a double storey home. This is the staircase, which can be short or long but it can seem like Mt Everest to them. This is one feature that a two-storey home cannot avoid having. For those who are in their senior years, this is one issue that they would have to live with if they decided to reside in such a home. They would have to climb and descend it with their weakened knees as often as necessary.
However, if your granny would rather stay in her bedroom for the entire day, then the stairs would not be a problem. What would trouble her is the function of calling you or anyone else in the house. Most of the time, you would be downstairs and you just might not hear her call. It would be painful for her to make her voice louder though. The best that you can do is to install a paging system in your home.
There are families, however, who cannot avoid having their elderly in their double storey homes. They have to make their homes convenient and comfortable for their beloved grandpa's or grandma's. The solution would be to install a stair lift. This would make climbing the stairs easier for the elderly. Another practical solution would be to prepare another room on the ground floor. This will be devoted for the use of any elderly guest in the house.
