Downdraught Extraction

Conventional technologies for dust or fume extraction typically work by pulling/sucking

the pollutants such as coolant mist upwards and some distance away from the source. In the process, gas and debris are more often than not dragged past the operators face, thereby directly contaminating the breathing zone. Downdraught extraction provides a simple but effective solution to this problem.

Downdraught extraction is based on the fact that very few pollutants have any natural buoyancy, and virtually every pollutant is heavier than air. As a result, pollutants sink to the ground as soon as any induced buoyancy/velocity (such as that imparted by grinding from a wheel or heat from a welding process) is removed. Even welding fumes rapidly lose their buoyancy when mixed with ambient air. Gravity takes control of the polluting particles and gases and induces them to gradually settle downwards. Consequently, an effective extraction process is one that goes with the flow and traps pollutants by a downward suction method.

Downdraught extraction typically works through downdraft tables, which comprise a workbench and an extraction/filtration system rolled into one. Downdraft tables are ideal for fume extraction in grinding, welding, sanding or even painting & varnishing jobs. Operators carry out the work process as usual, using the downdraft table as a work bench. All debris and fumes are automatically removed through the downdraught extraction process without needing any extra effort from the workmen. The pollutants are trapped through advanced filtration systems and only clean air comes out as a result of the process. Whats more airflow, volumes and velocity in the downdraft table can be easily adjusted according to the specific task at hand, thereby optimizing filter life and operating costs.

Advanced downdraft tables that use the downdraught extraction process, such as the ones designed and built by Air Cleaning Systems, come in several sizes and are equipped with steel or fibreglass work surfaces. Customers can even choose a wet scrubber system for explosive particles. The tables use self-cleaning cartridges with charcoal or HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filters. As well as this, the size and portability of the downdraft tables can be customized according to customer specifications.
