The Hellboy comics, with their cast of classic movie monsters and freaks people to bear their influence proudly on their sleeves. Likewise, Hellboy: The Science of Evil does nothing show on pretending it is not a radical God of War clone. It has the same controls: a light and hard attacks, overpowered a grapple move, a roided-up "Rage" mode, and plenty of "Tap Square! Tap Triangle," Contextual finishing moves and interactive cutscenes.

But if you want to imitate the leader of the pack, you might as well do it well or not do it at all. Surprisingly, The Science of Evil almost pulls it off, and despite its shortcomings, is still probably the best portable God of War clone you will play for awhile. The fighting is brutal and satisfying, if a tad wonky and does not require much thought. Head meetings, apart from a couple of guys are epic, multi-tiered, environment-ranging issues. And believe it or not, this piece of film merchandising pulls out some of the best graphics yet seen on PSP, with beautifully designed environments rendered with eye-popping comic color and neato lighting effects.

Unfortunately, many highlights saw playing The Science of Evil is offset by plenty of lows.Aside from a terrible camera and a few PS1-looking levels to address these aforementioned chaps Pipettes, the biggest problem is that the game is just a beat-em-up plain and simple, and while the game is fun, it starts to wear thin as the game progresses. It seems that The Science of Evil creators were not ignorant about this subject, and sees the looming danger of monotony, decided they would just end things before they got worse. It is unexpectedly anticlimactic and disappointing at the same time when the credits roll after only five hours on the heels of an abysmal final boss that could pass for an early game mini-boss.

One would think that with licensed games like this, we would be happy if they got over more quickly so we could move on to better things. Generally, this is true. But when The Science of Evil met his early demise it felt more like a wake than a birthday party. It could have been a contender, but The Science of Evil is just above average, and leaves a sour reminder that cynicism we harbor in the direction of licensed games are not exclusive to people who play them. It is a shame.
