We thought Pac-Man Championship Edition was the perfect modern Pac-Man back when we played it on Xbox Live. But then we played Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and now, the first Champ Edition is hard to go back to. It's slower, has a lot less content, and lacks a hundred ghosts. So why, after almost four years, would the developer Namco Bandai bringing the original Championship Edition for PlayStation Minis instead of the superior DX version? Worse, this version lacks one feature that made it so appealing at first.

Pac-Man Championship Edition reimagined the original 1981 arcade smash as a time trial game (either five or ten minutes), where the maze was constantly changing and you have tried to achieve as high a score as possible before the clock stopped. What made it so addictive was online leaderboards, which is constantly kept track of all your friends' high scores. There's nothing like a little friendly competition to keep you playing a game much longer than you would on your own.
Here are the two issues with Pac-Man Championship Edition on PSP:
It has no online functionality, so you can not send your score to the leaderboards and compare with your friends.
This is not Championship Edition DX.
Addressing the first concern, the game has robbed the main reason we liked it. We all wanted to be on top of our friends' leaderboard. We would spend hours and hours trying to get the high score, and when we had what we would think we were finally finished with Championship Edition ... until some idiot jumped over us and we were back to play again occupied.
Without this factor for competitiveness, is my motivation for playing away. I play once, and I put a high score. OK, guess I could play again and try to beat it ... but even if I do it, nobody will ever know because the post is not posted online.
Granted, no PlayStation Mini have any online functionality, but that just begs the question: Why bother porting a game that builds on the online leaderboards?
The other big problem is that this is less than Championship Edition DX. It's really hard to go back to this after we've been chomping ghost train and enjoy the many more maps and modes DX. The difference between the two is almost as great as it was between the original Pac-Man and the first Championship Edition. Why not port the new DX version for the PlayStation Minis?
One compliment I can give is to Championship Edition still looks good. The presentation is really clean and the flashing neon will remind older gamers of the arcade glory days.As all PlayStation Minis, it can be played on both your PSP and PS3 (although it does not look so hot on the PS3).
Concluding remarks
Pac-Man Championship Edition on the PSP is too little, too late. Not only is it a four-year old game with a better successor is currently available, it deletes online leaderboards that originally made it so addictive. There is a new champion in town, and it is not so.
