Movie tie-in games are usually pretty awful, and unfortunately, Tron Evolution does not do much to buck this trend - although it does make a little. Takes place between the original movie and sequel, Evolution follows the adventures of a program (it is the Tron universe word for a virtual person) called "Beta" as he is made to compete in games created by Flynn brunt of Tron universe. The specific purposes for which Beta participating in these games is never entirely clear, since PSP games have almost no cutscenes or explanatory interstitial of any kind.

Nevertheless, the games you want to take on as Beta has mostly been responsible together. Tron's trademark light-cycle racing is here and makes up the bulk of what the non-hardcore fans are expected to recognize from Tron IP. Racing itself is a little dusty, run among four cycles, and the game keeps slavishly to "rubber-band theory of pure design: who is ahead will be pulled back toward the pack, but who is behind pulled up in a constant back and forth, minimizing the degree to which skill issues. Additionally, the entire game world consists almost entirely of blue and green energy, which becomes tiresome to watch after a few go-rounds.

This statement is equally true for Evolution's other game modes, including "recognition" - a kind of super hi-tech Duck Hunt, and melee combat sections, which effectively makes a tepid luster to Final Fight. By far the best games are those taken directly from the old school Atari Tron game, both because they are the funniest in terms of gameplay, and because they seem to "fit" Tron vibe much better than the others. First among these would be light-cycle Grid mode, which is a fast paced version of "snake" game you used to play on your calculator back in trig: avoid the enemy's tail while trying to make the enemy into your tail. Cycle Arena resembles this condition, but has more wide open levels, smoother control, and a more arcade-y feel. And then there's the thought mode, which feels super duper return with blocks graphics and slow units - if you're old enough to remember the old arcade game Battlezone, this one is kinda like that: you move your tank around, try to take The advantage of cover, and blast enemy tanks with virtual projectiles.

Now, while we say that these past few modes are the "best", do not think it means we think they are good. With the exception of online games - which you can play for free on almost any smartphone these days - Evolution's suite of titles has been mediocre at best. Controls are often laggy, enemy AI relies heavily on cheating, and difficulties are mostly frustratingly high and impossible to change. Although Evolution Sports multiplayer, it is only through ad hoc mode, which means you and all you want to play against all wanted to be in the same room with your own PSPs and your own copy of Evolution. Kinda lame.

'Course, it's not all bad - fans of the IP will no doubt appreciate the graphics and general Tron ethos that permeates the game, and everything in it. But unless you happen to be one of the "all things Tron!" crowd, you'd be best served by keeping the distance here.As with so many other movie tie-in titles, Tron Evolution simply does not live up to expectations his brother leads.
