Doug Block ( 51 Birch Street) shows too much of his self-indulgent side with this often regrettable look at his relationship with his daughter, Lucy, as recorded through the years by Block's omnipresent hand-held camera. Still, it is hard not to watch family dysfunction, whether it is on a daily talk show or a "higher-art" documentary.

Obviously, Block has been filming his daughter on a regular basis since she was a baby. Now 17 and preparing to leave home for college, Lucy's latest life chapter becomes the basis for papa's sturm and drang over the prospect of no longer having his daughter in his life. But did Block ever have Lucy in his life if so many of their interactions were mediated by a camera? The Kids Grow Up doesn't quite answer this question nor is Block brave enough to see his own failings. At least there are a few epiphanies from Block's wife, Marjorie Silver, and Lucy herself. One glimmer of hope for Block is that he considers himself one of the "kids" of his film's title. The other positive sign is that Lucy seems remarkably mature and well-adjusted considering her upbringing.

What is most watchable about The Kids Grow Up is also what makes it an uncomfortable experience. Block is clearly insensitive about his daughter's privacy. (Bits where he tells a dog to "shut up" or wisecracks about his father's second marriage or films his bed-ridden wife while she is having a major depression doesn't make him look any better.) It is bad enough to film your family members on a constant basis, but to exhibit the resultsand presumably make a profit off of themrepresents a violation of sorts. The great unstated irony is that these days many college-age children return home soon after (if not before) school ends. Doug Block might get his daughter back before he knows it!

Of course, The Kids Grow Up is hardly the sole documentary with a built-in exploitation problem. But that doesn't excuse the invasive excesses. Sadly, this project shouldn't have been made and probably shouldn't be seen.
