Dr. Oz's Plastic Surgeon Warns Fat Comes Back After Liposuction

Liposuction has been on the top of the "most popular plastic surgery" lists since the 1980s

, and it is no wonder when you stop and think about what this surgery claims to be able to do. With one simple procedure, you can suction fat off your body forever, right? Well, the truth is, according to Arthur Perry, the plastic surgeon on the Doctors, Dr. Oz's famous talk show, those fat cells may be gone for good, but fat might come back.

Now, this does not mean the procedure is not effective. In fact, Dr. Perry states that it is very effective. If you are looking to suction off some flab around your thighs so you can fit into your tight pants, then this procedure will do the job. However, there may be a catch. Often, within a year after surgery, the same four or so pounds of fat that the doctor removed will reappear, often somewhere else. If you have it suctioned off your thighs, you may grow new fat cells on your belly.

Why is this? In the ages before obesity and excessive fat was a problem, people went through periods of leanness. The body was created to pack on fat when extra food was available to help it survive these less bountiful periods. Those who had the ability to store fat well would live longer. Sadly, our bodies are still trained to follow this, and when we continue to over feed them, new fat cells will start to pop up to replace the ones removed in the procedure.

According to Dr. Perry, most patients who have liposuction weigh the same as they did prior to the procedure after one year. This goes to show that vacuuming out all of the fat in a certain area is not always a permanent solution.

So what does this mean for those considering the procedure? Should they skip it because it does not work? No, this is not what this opinion means at all.

Rather, those who are serious about trimming and toning need to consider the procedure, particularly to help them with those areas of the body that are not responding to diet and exercise. However, after you have the procedure, you must focus on a healthy diet and exercise plan.

The only way to prevent this phenomenon of having fat creep back into your body, but in different areas, is to be proactive in keeping it at bay. Those who are following a healthy diet and getting sufficient exercise are often very happy with their results from this particular procedure.

So, if you are planning liposuction, make sure you are ready to do what it takes to ensure that your outcome is what you want. Talk to your surgeon to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If your doctor feels you are and you are committed to doing what it takes to get into good shape once you have the procedure, then sign up and get it scheduled.
