Dr Tim Sharps Resilience: Maintaining Happiness Through The Hard Times

Ever feel like youre walking on thin ice? Like youre juggling too many balls in the air? Or that you are in the middle of an ocean during the perfect storm? A very good friend and highly respected thought leader described it succinctly when she said, dealing with the challenges of modern day life, work and children should not have to be like a tightrope walk over a tank of piranhas lose your footing for even one second (Right on Jennifer!)

The level of stress and pressure in the workplace has increased so dramatically that the World Health Organization calls it "the health epidemic of the 21st century." People are always on the go, always on demand, for most it has become a case of either you sink or swim.

But there is more to life than our computers, reports, deliverables, targets, bills and pay check, right? Yes, the tide is getting higher and the waves are stronger than ever but surely there are lulls in between, where you can afford to float around a bit, rest and recharge. That is, if you have the right skillset.

Our Premium Partner, Dr Tim Sharp of the Happiness Institute, writes about this in RESILIENCE:

Maintaining happiness through the hard times. Dr Tim Sharp says:

Life is not always smooth sailing and even the luckiest and best of us face hardships at times. At The Happiness Institute we strongly believe everyone can experience more happiness but were also realistic enough to know that no one will be 100% happy 100% of the time.

With this in mind we recognise that as humans, even as happy humans, well experience a range of emotions (both positive and negative). Accordingly, we also believe that happiness is not just about enjoying the good times (although this is an important part of happiness) but in addition, happiness is also about working through the difficulties we all face from time to time.

Happy people tend to face these challenges more effectively; theyre more resilientand not surprisingly, resilience breeds happiness. So next time youre experiencing difficulties or facing adversity or struggling with challenges, try the following resilience tips tested and recommended by The Happiness Institute:

- reach out and utilise your support network (happy & resilient people dont necessarily cope with everything on their own but rather, they reach out and appropriately ask for help)

- when and where appropriate, use humour and laughter to see things differently and to remain positive

- by all means, learn from your experiences, but dont dwell on the past (especially on or about things that cant be changed)

- practice helpful thinking strategies and do whatever you can to remain hopeful & optimistic about the future

- dont catastrophise and keep things in perspective

- look after your (physical) health including making sure you get plenty of sleep and rest

Here at Workplace Incentives, our mission is to help you achieve this. We want to help you develop the skillset, and the mindset that will empower you. Allowing you to engage in activities that will help you be more resilient in dealing with the demands you may be experiencing.
