Drafting A Cover Letter, And, Yes, The Resume

THE COVER LETTER

THE COVER LETTER

A rsum is often presented with a cover letter and the candidate is often so focused on what goes into the former that the latter is often simple and straightforward at best and pathetic at worst. The cover letter is often critical in determining whether you will get the job or not. Those in the recruitment team commissioned to shortlist candidates may not get past your cover letter if what you have stated in it or the way you have stated it, in itself, demonstrates that you lack clarity in what you are seeking. So what makes a cover letter a good cover letter? There are certain aspects to it that are essential. You need to

Introduce yourself

Mention your rsum and that it is attached

Tell why youre applying for the job

Ask for an interview

Many employers are more interested in your cover letter than your rsum because it tells them why youre applying and gives insight into your personality. The purpose of a rsum is to obtain an interview, so that you may get a chance to have a conversation with the employer and thus prove to them your suitability. Your cover letter is your opportunity to make that conversation happen, so we cant possibly overemphasize the importance of the cover letter.

The letter should be as unique as you are. To write one that could belong to any of the other candidates, one that is so generic as to say nothing in particular about you is to miss the purpose of the letter. The worst thing you can do is write an offhand or one-size-fits-all cover letter. You must write with the specific needs and values of the prospective employer in mind. The cover letter is ideally a one-page proposal to fill an important business need that youve identified in the company through your research.

So how do we go about writing one? Start by summing up your employers current needs and describe how you fit the bill as one who can meet those needs. Use numbers that are meaningful to the prospect. State why you feel you are the man or the woman for the job. If you have relevant experience to support the claim then state it as proof. Mention work and educational accomplishments that would lead your prospect to conclude that you have the skills they are seeking in their ideal candidate. Provide contact information and request a meeting.

THE RSUM

The purpose of a rsum is to present yourself even before you can do so in person. So needless to say that you need to put your best foot forward and take all measures so that you come across as the right fit for the job. The rsum is a document that briefly presents your skills, education, and experience. This critical document has gone through many changes with every change in work culture/ethic. Today it is important that you reflect in all your communication, written as well as spoken, that you have a fairly good knowledge of the company. Research the employer before writing your rsum. Study the job advertisement thoroughly to understand the description of the vacancy. Understand how your experience and education match up with the job requirements. With that understanding highlight your strengths in the specific context of the job you are applying for, in doing so keep it brief -- do not exceed more than 3 pages of text. Decision makers today have neither the time nor the inclination to study long narratives describing your career and ambitions. They have real problems and opportunities, and they need help with them. Therefore, it is precisely those problems and opportunities that your rsum needs to address. Show specifically and quantitatively what you can contribute to the company if they take you on board.

The days of the self-centered rsum are over. The old-fashioned Industrial Age rsum starts with the applicants self-serving objectives of working toward individual success, however defined. Multiple copies of such a rsum are indiscriminately sent to a number of employers in the fond hope that some would send an invitation to an interview. This approach to job application is not always successful. There are two kinds of rsums: generic and targeted. A generic rsum is one that you can post on social-media sites and hand to prospects as you encounter them. And a targeted rsum is aimed at a particular prospective employer and is the product of serious research into that organization. A targeted rsum is tailored carefully to reflect the mission and values of the organization, as well as the specific job description. If you really want that job, then you need to send them a targeted rsum.
