Dreaming In My Bubble Bath
Covered with bubbles in my bath last night, my thoughts drifted back to when I was a small child
.
A highlight of the week was spending the weekend with my Gran and Grandpa. Relaxing in my fabulous bathtub, I thought of their bathroom. It was a normal 1950's style, green wall tiles along with a yellowish vinyl floor. However this was the 1970's so it really did look extremely old fashioned.
My very best memory was of the incredibly deep large tub. Sliding up and down, I could produce some quite big waves, a small tsunami and would only let up once the water had poured over the edge of the bath. Wow what terrific fun this all was!
Gran would come in and with a sparkle in her eye, would look affectionately at me and say "what fun you're having, my child! Youre just like your Mum", she thought back "I remember the lakes on the bathroom floor when she made the same type of tidal waves. Remember to dry well between each of your toes!". I used to be extremely ticklish and so Gran used this chance to tickle my feet accompanied by squeals of laughter.
Next we'd hurry down to their family room, to keep comfy next to a roaring fire.
"Can I share with you what bathing was like when I was little?" said Grandpa. I always loved to hear these good old tales. I could see a far-away look in Grandpas eyes, while he thought back. "We didn't even have a bath in our house" said Grandpa. "Bath day was Saturday, not every single day like today. My brothers and I will be bundled off to the neighborhood town 'bath-house' where we paid our money and were then given access to a good tub. I must confess, if we had something easier to do on the Saturday morning, we wouldn't think twice about missing the tub. Playing with your buddies seemed much more exciting. You may question how we got away with this. It was quite simple really. Our mother died when we were quite young therefore we didn't have someone to check behind our ears! That was during the early 1900's, a lot has changed since that time.
"What was your bath like Gran? I asked.
"We also did not have an inside bathroom, neither did there exists a geyser. We bathed in a zinc bath, very similar to the bath we make use of for giving a bath to Ruffie in the garden. Wintertime was cold so Mother would place the tub in the middle of the kitchen because this was the warmest room in our house. She heated up the large copper kettle over the log fire and poured out the hot water into the bathtub. I had been so pleased I was the oldest simply because I was always first in line for having a bath! My kid sister then hopped in the same bath of water when I'd finished! You're right Grandpa, so much has changed since that time".
"Oh dear, my water is starting to get cold". With that I was back in my beautiful bubble bath again. I glanced about and so cherished just what I had in my recently remodeled bathroom. I'm so very fortunate to enjoy a really trendy modern bathroom - contemporary coordinated faucets and accessories, gorgeous sanitary ware. Just what a treat, such an oasis of peace and comfort that's all my very own. Hearing Granny as well as Grandpa's memories gave me a feeling of being very privileged to live in this era of outstanding bathroom technologies.
