Dress the Part If You Want People to See You As a Manager

If you want to be successful as a manager, you need to look like a manager. And that means you need to dress the part.Shakespeare told us all the world's a stage and we each must play our part. If you've recently become a manager, you've taken on a new part and you may have to change your costume.There is a psychological law known as the Law of Authority, which says that people respond to authority whether it's real or perceived. One way to make sure that people do perceive you as having authority is to look authoritative. That means your image, your appearance, your silent message to the world.If you're not convinced of this, try this exercise. Next time you are in a place where you can watch people while they are going to work or coming from work or having a lunch break, get a cup of coffee and just sit there and watch them. Look at the people and try to guess what they do and where they fall in the hierarchy of their organization, just based on how they're dressed and how they are presenting themselves to the world. Guess!Now of course you don't know whether you're right or wrong, and you don't need to, because what we're dealing with here is perception your perception. So ask yourself why you think this person is a manager and this other person is not. Why do you think he belongs in the boardroom as a senior manager and she is more likely to be delivering coffee to the boardroom as support staff? What is it about these people that makes you think that? That's your perception.The next step is to go home and take a good look at yourself when you're dressed for work or get dressed for work even if you're not ready to go. And ask yourself this question: If I didn't know me and I saw me looking like this what would I think I did? Would I say "yes this person looks like a manager" or would I not? If the answer is "well, maybe not", then think about what you may be doing for (or against) your career by the way you look, your silent message to the world. And if your perception is not what you want it to be, then maybe you need to look at changing some things.I wouldn't presume to tell you what to wear to work, because I don't know where you work or what the dress code is. You can figure that out for yourself. But as a manager, you must make sure that the message you send through your personal presentation, your image, is serving you and promoting other people's perception of you as a person of authority.
