On the other hand, if you aren't sure that the romantic feelings are mutual yet, a gift of flowers could possibly turn the girl you admire into a crazy freaked out and somewhat exasperated person. Trust me. I know from experience.

Once upon a time I dated the most persistent young man that has ever lived on this planet. It was a summer fling that he wanted to turn into something more serious. I thought I had made it clear to him before I left for college that fall that I wasn't interested in furthering our relationship, but it was obvious that he didn't get the point.

The packages and romantic e-mails seemed like they would never end. It was almost a little creepy, but I felt safe knowing that we were close to 1,000 miles apart. I remember coming home from class on Valentine's Day to discover a huge bouquet of flowers in a beautiful vase. I didn't even have to ask my roommates to figure out that it was for me.

I called the young man who had so generously ordered the beautiful gift and basically told him thanks, but no thanks. Persistence doesn't die easily though.

That next summer, I was presented with an opportunity to move to Japan and I took advantage of it. I loved every moment in Japan, but it was obvious from the love letters that I was receiving almost daily that my admirer wasn't going to let an ocean get in the way of our relationship. He even got my mom a plant and a card for Mother's Day.

Well, 15 months after arriving in Japan, I was back in Seattle. My parents picked me up from the airport and we had a wonderful ride home. I guess I shouldn't have been at all surprised when I got home and discovered a large vase of flowers on the front porch. This boy was truly making me crazy.

Everything ended up O.K. Eventually after seeing me date several other people, my persistent little friend moved on, and now I'm happily married to somebody else. Now when I'm blessed with a flower delivery in Toronto I can be love crazy instead of crazy freaked out.
