Driven To Distraction Keeping Your Eyes On The Road
Drivers can be easily distracted by a plethora of things
, which can lead to missed turnings, ignoring of traffic signs and, in worst case scenarios, car accidents. So what is it thats distracting the drivers on the roads today?
A feature that has proved distracting for years since its incorporation into the automobile is the car stereo whether youre changing station or simply singing along to your favourite tune, your full attention will be diminished by the music. This has been tackled by car manufacturers by integrating radio/stereo controls onto the steering wheel or dashboard, which has proven successful; however with the sheer number of different MP3 players on the market, not all are compatible and some will require the driver to take away their full attention. Studies have also shown that drivers who play their music incredibly loud in the car are far more likely to have an accident due to decreased attention and response time.
Another possible distraction which has been addressed in more recent years is that of navigation it had always been a major problem of being lost somewhere and having to refer to a map on the passenger seat or dashboard or simply driving slowly to find out where you are. However, now that satellite navigation systems are available, often for fairly cheap prices, it is far easier to find out where you are going or where you are, and thanks to the narrated instructions, you need not take your eyes off the road.Perhaps the largest distraction (and also one of the most recent ones) is the mobile phone. Despite numerous laws and safety warnings telling drivers not to use their phones whilst driving, it is still widespread. It is true that the number of drivers seen talking on their handsets has decreased since it was made an offence; however this has led to an increase in the number of drivers choosing to text or instant message each other whilst driving.
A number of cars feature hands-free systems or Bluetooth connectivity to ensure that drivers can still speak whilst driving however a similar system has not been created for text. Perhaps with the release of the new iPhone 4S and its Siri system (as well as other mobile phones using advanced speech-to-text technology), drivers will be able to dictate their message and send it without having to take their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road.
