Driver Safety - Drinking And Driving

According to a survey of 1,000 drivers carried out by "Brake" (the road safety charity)

, 50% of drivers admit to drink driving and 25% of drivers admit to driving after drinking an amount of alcohol which they clearly know is affecting their driving.

The current legal alcohol limit for driving is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. However, it is a well known fact that there is no foolproof way of consuming alcohol and staying within the legal limit. Each individual's tolerance to alcohol is dependant upon several factors including their weight, gender, age and the amount of alcohol consumed etc. There is simply no way of knowing how much an individual can drink and still drive safely and stay within the legal limit.

Many motorists are simply unaware that any alcohol, even a small drink, will impair their driving ability. Each individual's tolerance to alcohol is dependant upon the above factors and subsequently it is impossible to calculate how much alcohol you have in your blood, even if you are aware of the exact amount you have consumed. The alcohol content of each alcoholic drink (i.e. beer, wine or spirit) varies from drink to drink and it is therefore virtually impossible to rely on guesswork in order to calculate units consumed before driving. According to a survey carried out by "Brake", an estimated 80 people die each year in crashes caused by drivers who are under the legal alcohol limit but whose driving is clearly impaired by alcohol. The only safe way is not to drink and drive at all!

There are many campaigns in place such as "THINK!" whose strategy for drink driving is to remind all drivers of the personal consequences of driving, and that a drink conviction can potentially ruin your life. In fact, not only can it potentially ruin your life, but it can end innocent lives too. There are also other campaigns in place such as the Campaign Against Drinking and Driving ("CADD") who provide support to the families of victims killed or injured by drunk drivers. They also provide victims of drink drivers with emotional and practical support, advice and information about coping with a sudden bereavement or injury as a result of an accident involving a drunk driver.
