Drivers With Computer Chips Could Be Next
I ran into an article the other day, entitled, "Top-Secret: Drivers With Computer Chips could be next." I just had to read it. (Note: See source of article below)
The thesis of the article was that the current $400 driver is heading for extinction because there are no more technological advances possible for the current top of the line drivers. In fact looking at store prices it is a fact that there are very few drivers today that list at $400. (Of course, the price is usually $399.99, but we can call that $400 for simplicity.) And even for those, you usually can find a discount offered by somebody, so it is pretty safe to say that the $400 driver is already extinct.
So what will be the new technology that could bring back the $400 driver. According to this article here is a list of the technologies that won't bring back the $400 driver.
New adjustable weights on sole or on exterior of drivers
Minor aerodynamic improvements with the shape of the heads
Paint color changes actually the TaylorMade Ghost putter for some reason is having that effect, but this will only be a short term fad
Guaranteed longer drives especially when the technology responsible is simply making the shaft longer or lighter.
So what will the new technology be? What can someone invent that will make golfers line up around the block waiting to buy it like Steve Jobs does every time he comes up with a new version of the iphone?
The writer of the article is convinced that the answer is a driver with a computer chip in its head. If I understand this, this computer chip will tell you exactly how fast your swing was, where you contacted the face, and a bunch of other stuff. And this is not just a rumor.
In fact the article shows a picture of this driver, which has a pressure sensitive plate directly behind the club head face, and behind it a unit, which contains an accelerometer to detect swing speed. The driver collects data from each swing and communicates it to your cell phone via Bluetooth. You will have a cell phone application, which displays data from each swing along with your history and calculations of your improvement or otherwise over time.
Would you be willing to stand in line for 8 hours to buy your new computerized driver? Somehow I bet you would.
Note: The article was from MyGolfSpy.com, a golf forum and golf support site. I didn't get the name of the author for which I apologize.
