Driving And Bad Weather

Recently, I watched a YouTube video of a hail storm in Oklahoma

. The storm started out as heavy rain drops and then quickly turned into large drops of hail. A minute later into the video and there was a full on hail storm that left me shuddering as I thought of what might happen if my car was parked outside during something like that. Bad weather can happen any time anywhere. So, what happens if you are driving somewhere and you get stuck in bad weather? There are options.

It isn't unusual when it rains in North Carolina to suddenly find yourself in the middle of what could only be described as a torrential downpour of rain-you know, the kind where even your windshield wipers can't keep up and you can no longer even see a few feet in front of you. In situations like these, it is perfectly acceptable (if not, encouraged) for you to safely pull over to the side of the road. If this is what you intend to do, then make sure that it is absolutely clear to the other motorists around you that this is what you intend to do. Make your intentions clear by putting on your turn signal for the direction that you wish to go in. If you have your hazard lights on, it may be necessary for your to temporarily turn them off so that other motorists can see your directional. After you've made your way over to the side of the road, turn your directional off and put your hazards back on. If you are near an over pass, some people find it more convenient to pull over underneath the overpass so that the rain or inclement weather isn't quite as pressing.

In the event of a tornado or if there is a tornado warning, you will want to get off of the highway and get to a building that has a basement. Other types of secure buildings of this nature are typically found in schools and libraries, so make your way to one of those. If you don't have time to get off of the highway, some have recommended driving until you reach the next overpass. Park your car, get out and make your way to the highest point under the overpass. This is usually a small area where the underside of the bridge connects with the land that it is sitting on top of. This will provide you with a sort of cocoon in which the tornado may pass over you. However, you should make sure that you try to hold on to something if you can. Whatever you do, it is pointless to try to outrun a tornado.

Lightning may not hurt you while you are in a vehicle because the rubber from your tires keep you and the vehicle grounded. So, in the event that lightning does strike your vehicle, it will pass through the vehicle and right out through the tires, leaving you unharmed. If you have plans to go somewhere and the weather is bad, use your judgment as to whether or not it's worth it to leave. You may be better off staying put until the storm passes.
