Driving On Roadways In The Rain
They speed, and they don't pay quite as close of attention as they probably should
. All of this results in the car wrecks that we slow down to look at on the side of the road.
Whenever it starts to rain, this is the most dangerous time to be on the roadways driving. It is during this time that people need to slow down and be more aware of their surroundings, this way they are able to respond more quickly and alertly while driving. For instance, when you are on a highway or local road and it starts to rain, you should make sure that you are leaving enough space between you and the other person in front of you. This added space will allow you more time to react should the person in front of you decide to stop short or make a sudden turn onto a roadway.
Leaving enough stopping distance between you and other cars is imperative for making sure that you are keeping yourself as well as other people around you safe at all times. The last thing that you want to have to worry about is how you are going to get out of a car accident that is about to happen. A few years ago, I was driving on the highway on my way back from work when it was raining very heavily. The rain was so bad that several motorists had actually put their hazard lights on and had pulled over to the side of the road as well as under the overpasses just so that they could allow some time to pass before resuming driving.
As I was driving in the center lane, I saw what looked like a little red car zipping in and out of the traffic behind me. As it turns out, I was right. No sooner had I spotted this car, it soon came up behind me and then zipped around to my left to pass me. However, because of how hard it was raining, there was standing water in the left lane near the guardrail. It didn't take much for the little car to hit the standing water and then hydroplane. Luckily, no one was hurt as the car hydroplaned in his own lane and hit the guardrail/wall to his left versus veer out into the heavily exposed traffic in the other lanes.
This was just one example of how dangerous it can be to drive recklessly when it is raining outside. The best way to play it safe is to reduce your speed while driving. If you know that the weather is going to be bad and you don't want to get stuck in traffic, figure out alternative routes ahead of time, or leave early to arrive wherever it is that you need to be on time. It's not worth it to get hurt or to hurt anyone else simply because you are in a rush.
