Driving Safety Tips
This morning, when I was thumbing through my local newspaper
, I came across a report on a home invasion that happened back in July of 2007 in New Haven, Connecticut. In this attack, Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters Hayley (17) and Michaela (11) were brutally and sexually assaulted and murdered. William Petit, Jennifer's loving husband and, of course, Hayley's and Michaela's loving father, was also brutally assaulted, but managed to survive when the family's assailants botched their attempt to kill him also (The house was set on fire, I'm assuming they wanted to just burn him alive, although the article did not give all the specifics.) It's a shame that the two evil men, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky that committed these atrocities are still alive, and in a liberal state like Connecticut, they no doubt will only get "life in prison." Sometimes I wish that I could briefly run our country, for I assure you that I would have special plans for Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky. After I got done with them, perhaps some of these other scumbags would reconsider their paths in life. Unfortunately, I don't think that I will ever get my wish, but there is something I can do. You see, Joshua Komisarjevsky followed Jennifer, Hayley, and Michaela home from the supermarket. Yes, you read that right. They were tailed by one of these evil men from inside the grocery store. So, I want to share some driving safety tips with you.
Driving Safety Tips
Never, ever, pick up hitchhikers. It does not matter the age, gender, race, or other apparent status. Criminals have been known to use defenseless-looking grandmother types to lure well-intentioned drivers over.
Always keep your car doors locked. Criminals often enter vehicles at stop signs, red lights, etc. More common is that they get in and hide in the car when the owner is inside the store, house, park, wherever.
Look in the back seat and floor board before you get into your car.
When approaching your car, whether at home or in a parking lot, keep your eyes out for anything suspicious. If you see anything, move to the safest area and call the police.
Try to travel on well-lighted streets and through the best areas of town.
Don't run out of gas. Keep your car well-maintained. A stopped car is an easier target than a moving one.
Here's one you might not have thought of. When leaving your car at the repair shop, or just any time that you turn over your car keysremove the other keys! Do this even if you trust the other person. What if someone else was watching? Just take the other keys off.
If you are having car problems and can't raise the hood, stay in the car and wait for help (unless you can make it someplace safe like a business or police or fire station). If someone stops, roll the window down partially and ask them to call a relative, garage, friend, or the police.
Finally, are you being followed? You should be looking in your rear and side mirrors anyway for safe driving. But you should do this for personal safety as well. Check those mirrors! Make sure there is no Steven Hayes or Joshua Komisarjevsky following you and your family home.
Oh, one more thing. This little list is by no means complete. Make use of print and online resources to further educate yourself if need be.
