Recent research has discovered that around four out of five drivers admit to suspecting
that they may well have driven the morning after a night out and still been over the legal limit.
Nearly half of drivers questioned also said that they were aware of at least one other driver that regularly drank and drove. It is well publicised that the Christmas period sees a sharp increase i the number of people being caught out for drinking and driving, those driving the morning after a night out also make up a hefty part of the number found. If people are discovered to be over the legal limit the morning after they could face a minimum of one year's driving ban.
It has also been discovered that people over the age of 65 were the least likely to consider the fact that the morning after a drinking session they may still be over the legal limit. People in the 25- 34 age range were identified as being the group most aware of the risks driving the morning after pose.
It is estimated that around half of all drivers know somebody who drinks and drives and that nearly 70% would inform police if somebody they knew was driving after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
It is still very unlikely that people who drive the morning after a night out will still be over the limit but those who have stayed up late drinking into the small hours and getting little sleep will certainly be at risk of committing the crime.
However unintentional, people found to be over the drink drive limit the morning after a night out are still likely to face the consequences of a minimum one year driving ban.
It is wise to not drink the night before if you know you will need to use your car in the morning. Always allow time for the alcohol to work its way out of your system before attempting to drive. Alcohol affects people in different ways so always judge yourself rather than going by the example of others.
