Driving With All Kinds Of Distractions

You know- the kind who can talk and chew gum while walking in a straight path

. Then there are those people who couldn't talk and chew gum at the same time if their life depended on it. The last few times that I have driven with my mother while my brother was in the car, I noticed that my mother is definitely not the multi-tasker type when it comes to driving. All it takes is for my brother and I to be present in the car having a conversation with her for her to not be able to focus on the road. Yes, it is scary.

A great example of this could be seen when my brother and I started arguing about something mundane. Suddenly, my mother became involved and before we knew it, someone behind her was honking at her. It turned out that she had been sitting at a green light. This was followed up by other instances in which she was honked at for slowing down at a green light for no reason as well as stopping at an intersection- all because she was so engrossed in conversation. We have missed turns and driven below the speed limit due to nothing else but talking. Now, when I get in the car with my mother, I try to keep the conversation to a minimum. Failing that, I volunteer to drive. However, my mother isn't the only person with this affliction.

There are millions of people out there who are behind the wheels of their vehicles and are driving while completely distracted. If you ask any one person how distracted they are at any given time while behind the wheel, you will no doubt get a bunch of people who are in denial about it. Every time you plug in your MP3 player, change CDs, tune the radio station, answer your cell phone, talk to other people in your car, text or send emails from your phone, or fiddle around with your GPS device, you are driving while distracted. The only way to not drive while being distracted is to cut out the distractions all together.

In high school, I was best friends with a girl whose father was an ex Firefighter. Whenever my friend's father would pick us up from track practice or some other school function, I noticed that the radio was never on. One day, I asked her why this was, and she responded that her father didn't like listening to the radio because when he was a firefighter, he was always on call, and the radio was always on with various stations calling in firefighters for something. He was only too glad to enjoy a little peace and quiet. It also cut down on the distraction while he was driving. Looking back, I can't blame him. However, each person is different, and I know that I prefer to have the radio on (usually blasting) when I am in my car alone. Sometimes, however, it is nice to enjoy a little peace and quiet while driving as I have found that it does improve your ability to focus on the road before you.
