Drowning In Soda: America's Health Problems Made Far Worse By Massive Soda Consumption
To maintain good health the best thing that you can drink is water
. Natural water contains minerals that are very beneficial to proper nutrition and to maintain good health. But over the past few decades soda and sugary fruit type drinks have replaced water for many people as their liquid of choice. These sugary drinks are sold in most every grocery store in the country, advertisements for these products clog the TV and airwaves plus they are relatively inexpensive so it is no wonder that a huger percentage of consumers drink these beverages instead of or far more than healthy water.
These sugary juice drinks do come with a cost far higher than their price tag, your compromised health. In study after study it has been proven that the ingredients in these drinks especially High Fructose Corn Syrup increases the incidence of diabetes and weight gain but in a new study even more problems are brought to light.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco which was presented at the annual Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention conference of the American Heart Association showed that the consumption of soda and sugary fruit drinks "has led to 6,000 more deaths, 14,000 more cases of heart disease and 130,000 new cases of diabetes in the past 10 years". The focus of the study was on people 35 years and older so the results were probably skewed downward since the majority of these drinks are consumed by the young.
"We can demonstrate an association between daily consumption of sugared beverages and diabetes risk," researcher Litsa Lambrakos said. "We can then translate this information into estimates of the current diabetes and cardiovascular disease that can be attributed to the rise in consumption of these drinks". These new findings could also help in the push for a new tax on these beverages. According to policy experts, a tax of just one cent per ounce would reduce soda consumption by 10 percent, plus it would raise millions of dollars to fight diseases related to the consumption of these products and fun awareness programs, just like taxes on cigarettes.
For me a small tax on soda, 1-2 cents per container, would help raise money to combat the diseases caused by these products plus the higher price would help lower consumption. For me a tax on these products is a win-win for everyone. We should also push for labels on these products informing consumers of the dangers that they pose.
