Drowsy drivers don't attract as much outcry in the news as drunk or drugged drivers do, but we should be just as warty of them as they are just as much of a danger to other road users. According to statistics released in the USA this month, forty one percent of drivers admit to having nodded off or fallen asleep behind the wheel, with eleven percent being guilty of doing so in the past year. In the past month, one in four drivers admitted to driving when they were so tired they could barely keep their eyes open'.

It's really hard to establish the actual statistics of car accidents that are caused by fatigue, as its not as simple as a test that you would do for a driver suspected of driving under the influence. Government campaigns have highlighted the dangers of driving when tired, but it seems that people are ignoring the warnings and putting their lives, and the lives of others at risk.

The research found that men are far more likely to drive when experiencing symptoms of tiredness and that people associate tired driving with overnight trips, which is not necessarily the case.

Some car companies have played around with sensors that pick up on erratic steering and other driving behaviours and flash for you to stop, but critics don't feel that this will stop a drowsy driver.
