Drug And Alcohol Rehab Means More Than The in Thing To Do
Rehabilitation for celebrities has become almost daily news over the past several years
. From golf great Tiger Woods battle with sex addiction to pop singer Britney Spears meltdown, the list of celebrities going to rehab keeps gaining attention.
But what may be missed behind the tabloid headlines is the reality that rehab is real mental health treatment for everyone, not just celebrities. Rehab can deliver good news in the lives of people fighting all kinds of addiction, including drug and alcohol abuse.
According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than 20 million people need but do not receive treatment for illicit drug or alcohol use.
The Office of National Drug Control Policy also reports: Substance abuse is one of our nations most significant public health challenges. It destroys lives, undermines families, and costs hundreds of billions of dollars annually in health care, legal, workplace and other expenses.
VH1s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew is a television series that chronicles the unscripted real-life experiences of a group of celebrities as they make the decision to enter themselves into a drug, alcohol and addiction treatment program.
The shows Web site states the celebrities have the sincere desire to achieve true rehabilitation and recovery. The recovery group is supervised by Dr. Drew Pinsky, medical director of the Department of Chemical Dependency Services at Southern California's Las Encinas Hospital.
While a television series cant replace actual treatment, it does bring awareness to the underlying need for mental health and drug rehabilitation. So do the celebrities who seek treatment, even though they may have made sensational headlines along the way.
Celebrities may be viewed as setting examples, both good and bad, in the public eye. While their trips to drug and alcohol rehab could be considered a fad or the in thing to do, it doesnt diminish the importance of rehab to the person who is reaching out for treatment at any time or period in his or her life.
