Drug Rehabilitation Programs- A Way To Come Out Of Drug Addiction
Drugs and alcohol have become one of the main causes of addiction in most of the people in these modern times
. It is estimated that there are over twenty-three million people over the age of twelve needing treatment for drug abuse in the United States. Therefore, it has become necessary and crucial to go in for a long term drug rehabilitation programs to address this overpowering problem.
In totality, the drug rehabilitation programs consist of two pronged strategy that addresses both the physical and psychological dependency of the addict on these drugs. In addition to that the social and behavioral symptoms must be tackled before the addict can be said to or termed as truly recovered and must be given certain tools so that they (drug addicts) can support the recovery status throughout their lives.
There is however, some debate going on about moderation and abstinence methods and whether these methods are indeed effective in case of illegal or other extremely destructive addictions. Nevertheless, it is a fact that a complete detoxification and sustained avoidance must be required to come out of drug addiction.
Scientific research that is going on since the beginning of 70s on drug rehabilitation programs has shown that a successful treatment involves changing the behaviors of the drug addicts to remove the addiction and avoid relapse. In fact, the National Institute of Drug Abuse has opined that recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment.
Decades of research and study on drug rehab programs carried on by National Institute of Drug Abuse has identified the following key elements that are effective in tackling the problem of drug abuse and these are:
Detoxification The first step involves the detoxification through the use of anti-additive drugs or other treatments. Some drugs take a long time to fully leave the body system especially, where the user or addict has built up a level of physical tolerance to these drugs and this in turn hides the addiction. Therefore, strict medical supervision is required in these cases to help them in minimizing withdrawal from drugs through anti-additive drugs.
Counseling and behavioral therapies The second step involves providing counseling and behavioral therapies that needs to be customized as per the patient needs as and when they arise. These therapies must be flexible in nature and require a long-term approach and cannot be accomplished successfully if provided as short term programs.
Other programs The last step in coming out of drug addiction involve providing the addict with occupational, social and life skills once he or she comes out of addiction in totality. These programs are necessary as the addict may have lost or had never learned the necessary occupational and social skills under the influence of addiction. In some special cases, criminal or educational needs are required to be incorporated in the drug rehab programs.
