Drug Shortage Can Affect Everyone

Everyone knows about the drug problems that face Americans today

, but they might not be thinking about the same kinds of drugs as the health care industry. There is a severe lack of legal drugs and are affecting the way patients are treated by doctors at almost every level. Just because a person is insured and has a good policy doesn't mean he or she is receiving the best possible drugs because many doctors are now being forced to offer drugs of a lesser quality because of the lack of quality drugs and the extreme expenses that go into producing and purchasing them. These are drugs that can be helpful at almost every level of treatment, but second tier drugs are becoming much more abundant in the health care world.

Right now more than 100 quality drugs that are commonly prescribed by doctors across the county are on the endangered species list of the drug world. The FDA oversees the health care drug industry but most of the drugs are produced by independent companies that are reducing the output of the top of the line drugs that serve the best in the interest of those who need them. Most of these independent companies that support the drugs that people need to sustain their quality of life simply can't afford to produce the top of the line products anymore and, in order to meet the bottom line that is vital to every company today, they simply have to cut costs which also means cutting back on the quality of health care.

Chemotherapy drugs are near the top of the list of drugs that are in limited supply and not readily available to those people who need them. They are invaluable in the treatment of cancer, but, again, the bottom line is that they are costly to produce and are sometimes being limited in supply even to hospitals.

It isn't always the fault of the doctors who have to prescribe substandard drugs because of cost limitations. The doctors might be the ones who are blamed, but it is the health care industry and the federal government that needs to step up and take action so that the average American who works hard for his or her health insurance are not penalized.

The current market system of drug distribution in this country very simply isn't working and as a result you will find that some of the medications that you need may not be available. It is up to Congress to address these issues and make changes which should include offering incentives to companies to produce these necessary drugs that are in short supply and also a requirement on behalf of the government for companies to inform the FDA when a drug may be coming in lower quantities due to slow downs or stoppages in production.
