Dry Eye Prevention Tips
Many people experience burning, itchy, and scratchy eyes caused by having dry eyes or dry eye syndrome
. All we want to do is scratch and rub to gain some form of relief but rubbing can actually make the condition worse. Unfortunately, this eye condition is becoming more common in todays modern world. There are a few simple adaptations people can make to their every day working and leisure lives that can prevent this irritating ailment that can also prolong the health of your eyes.
With a few simple changes to your life, you may be able to avoid dry eyes altogether! The first change you should make is to your diet. No one is telling you to give up your beloved french fries but you should make sure your diet is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids! These good fats are found in various types of fish like salmon, tuna, and even sardines. In fact, Omega-3 fatty acids have been clinically proven to lower your risk of dry eyes because the fatty acids keep the moisture in your eye and create a slight protective layer around your eye that helps keep debris out. If you simply cannot find a way to eat foods with Omega-3 fatty acids, consider taking a supplement.
Another change to make to your everyday lifestyle is to limit the amount of time you spend in front of electronic devices. Theres no reason to stop playing Angry Birds or reading the newspaper online but prolonged exposure to the pixels in your screen can cause your eyes to become tired and dry. If youre going to spend eight hours a day looking at a screen, only to come home and watch TV or surf the net some more, consider using eye drops before spending quality time in front of the TV or computer. Its also really important to remember to blink a little more when youre looking at your screen. Blinking more often will distributed more tears across your eyes and can help keep them moist. Also consider taking small breaks from your computer screen - for 30 seconds to one minute, try looking outside or conversing with a co-worker instead of looking at your screen.
If youre into sports, consider wearing glasses or goggles that protect your eyes. Swimmers understand the need for swimming goggles and even soccer stars understand the point of wearing protective sports goggles. By wearing protective eye wear, youre not only protecting your eyes from injury caused by the sport itself, youre also protecting your eyes from dust and dirt that may creep into your eyes and cause dryness. Swimmers should especially be wearing goggles in order to keep the chlorinated water out of their eyes. Chlorine will only make your eyes dry, so wearing swimming goggles can help.
Some other lifestyle choices may be harder to get rid of, like smoking. By lighting up, your eyes are not only exposed to dry eye-causing smoke, theyre also exposed to pollutants that can actually harm your eye sight. If you suffer from dry eyes and youre a smoker, you may want to stop smoking.
Here are a few other tips: limit the time you spend around air conditioners, electric fans, and even space heaters - all three take the moisture out of the air. If youre always around these electronic devices, invest in a humidifier. If you wear contact lenses on a constant basis, take them out and opt for
eye glasses every once in a while. Your contacts can dry out your eyes so switching to
eyeglasses frames even once a week will help eliminate dry eyes.
