Srinagar: As Kashmir continues to experience dry weather conditions for quite a while now, tourism sector appears to be a worried lot courtesy this trend.

Industry is banking on the valley's lofty mountains and slopes blanketed with snow to recover from the losses incurred during the last five months of unrest. But valley has had a little snowfall thus far much to the disappointment of people associated with the industry.

But persistent dry weather, it fears, might play the spoilsport.

"We have our eyes sets on winter to make up for the losses incurred during the unrest. All of us worried as there has been hardly any snowfall in the valley. We are praying for snowfall as soon as possible," Mushtaq Ahmad Burza, president Kashmir Hotels and Restaurant Owners Federation told Agence India Press.

Snow -capped mountains and winter sports events in the winter, Burza said, are the major fascination for the tourist round the world.

"All of us know that snowfall in the valley lures visitors here. People with advance bookings are waiting for the snow so that they can make their way to major winter tourist destinations like Pahalgam and Gulmarg," he said adding that for winter sports to kick-off, venues have to have a blanket of snow.

Kashmir's famous tourist resorts become a hub for the various sports activities- skiing and skating- as its mountains and slopes provide second to none turfs for the games' lovers.

No precipitation, according to the weathermen, is because of absence of western disturbances, which originate from Caspian Sea and after sweeping Pakistan and Afghanistan, enter Kashmir bringing snow and rainfall. And, it expects trend to continue for days ahead as well.

Fraternity would hope western disturbances to sweep the region and bring much needed precipitation and with it change in their fortunes. (AIP)
