Dubai's Palm Islands - another milestone
Yet another stunning project undertaken by Dubai is the palm islands that consist of reclaimed land
. The venture is a bold step undertaken and has proved to be a success despite the economic crisis faced at one time.
The project is threefold. Under this, three different islands - all in the shape of palm trees - will take shape around the Persian Gulf coast, adding more beach space to Dubai. Each palm island is larger than the last, with the smallest being 5 by 5 kilometres and the largest being almost eight times that size.
The first palm island Palm Jumeirah - is made up of a trunk, 17 palm fronds and a crescent shape that goes around the island. This has been made up of a vast amount of rock and sand. The construction of this palm island began in 2001 and 2009 saw the first tenants moving in. Development is not yet complete but is a speedy process. The island will see many villas, luxury hotels, spas and apartments and other commercial buildings. A monorail connecting the ends of the island as well as the mainland is also underway.
The construction of the second island Palm Jebel Ali Umar - began in 2002. Being larger by 50 percent than Palm Jumeirah, it will consist of not only commercial buildings and luxury villas but also a water theme park, six marinas, a sea village', and much more. A crescent surrounds this palm island also and it will have four theme parks which together will represent the world of discovery'.
Palm Deira, the third palm island and the largest of the undertaking was announced in 2004. As the project is so large it will take shape in many phases. Though originally planned to cover a vast area, various elements caused the plans to be re-evaluated over the years.
The palm islands together bring in an amazing array of luxury ventures that further cement Dubai's important position in today's commercial and industrial world. The sheer magnitude and splendour of the islands is something that all visitors should make a point to experience. If such visitors seek a
hotel in Dubai from which to base themselves then the Raffles Dubai, UAE, itself an architectural wonder is an excellent and ideal
luxury hotel Dubai.
