Dudley Zoological Gardens, A Memorable Experience
The Dudley Zoo has the distinction of being the solitary zoological garden in Britain
to include an Iron Age fort, breathtaking prehistoric remains, a medieval castle and intriguing underground caverns, all at the same location. The Adventure land will occupy the small fry and there are picturesque walking trails for the benefit of adults.
But there is no doubt that the focus here is on the multitude of animal species which can be found within its walls. The zoo which faced minor problems due to its architecture has now resolved these issues to the satisfaction of both animal inmates and its visitors.
Big cats like leopards and lions have been rehoused in spacious enclosures and the tigers have been granted a capacious enclosure of their own. A combination indoor/outdoor chimpanzee enclosure permits the visitors and the chimpanzees to mingle in a fairly sized area. The area allocated to lemurs is similarly capacious and exploits the wooded hillside terrain.
Since the zoo is situated on grounds surrounding a medieval castle on a hillock, room for expansion is necessarily limited. To achieve optimum use of the available area, the management has wisely allocated the larger areas to the big cats and primates, and used the remaining space for smaller residents like penguins, reptiles, wallabies, flamingoes and smaller primates. Interestingly the sea lions have been housed in a system of canals in the old moat of the castle, suitably modified to suit its new purpose.
A land train takes guests up to the castle, where another exciting attraction awaits them. Access to the immense medieval castle is included in the entrance fee, and visitors will be enthralled by the exhibition depicting the medieval history of Dudley, built into the castles rooms. Guests may also ascend the spiral stairs to the top of the building and take in the panoramic views over the West Midlands; you may even see the Earths curvature looking to the northeast.
The gift shop offering souvenirs and the refreshment kiosks are moderately priced, and there is a meticulously designed climbing frame and sandpit for the small fry incorporating hoists, pulleys chutes and tubes for a memorable experience.
