Review: Throughout the past decade Director Todd Phillips has created a name for himself by shaping the buddy comedy genre starting in 2000 with the release of "Road Trip." The films "Old School" (2003), "Starsky and Hutch" (2004), and "The Hangover" (2010) followed leading to Phillipss latest comedic creation "Due Date" created by a match made in heaven. Phillips teams up with Zach Galifianakis ("The Hangover", "Its Kind of a Funny Story") along with Hollywood a-list super star Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man", "Sherlock Holmes"). Downey plays future father Peter Highman who has been banned from being on an airplane because of an encounter with Galifianakiss character Ethan Tremblay. Peter has no other choice, but to drive cross country from Atlanta, Georgia to Las Angeles, California cross country with Tremblay whose dream is to appear on "Two and a Half Men." Together they embark on a chaotic, hilarious, emotional quest following the basic structure of the buddy comedy genre.
"Due Date" is not just another buddy comedy. It is a buddy comedy with two actors that many would have never paired them together in a movie, however, the chemistry that Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis have together on screen creates the perfect equation and drives the entire film from start until finish. Downeys serious subtle comedic dialogue is very clever and hilarious, while Galifianakiss boisterous, goofy and childish personality gets in the audiences face and brings the house down. Downey and Galifianakiss relationship clicks and connects with the audiences a lot more than other buddy comedy films and incorporates a deeper vibe concerning the back-stories of both Peter and Ethan allowing their characters to avoid being one-dimensional.
Michelle Monaghan does not do a very good job playing Robert Downey Jr.s wife Sarah Highman. She is very dull in the film and does not work well with Downey at all. Phillips fails to develop her character and portrays her in a very bad light. There are many questions surrounding her and her faithfulness to he husband Peter Highman. There are a couple unnecessary plot twists that seem like they were just thrown into the film and are never fully developed. Jamie Foxx was the subject of one of these twists, but isnt in the film long enough to deserve any praise for his part. He could have been a very important part of the film, but by the end his characters small appearance was very insignificant and did not fit into the overall scheme of things.
In the end, the film is about friendship and how friendship is found in the most unlikely of places and weirdest of circumstances. Together these two teach the audience how to have a good time and laugh at the mishaps that happen throughout life. In the words of Ethan Tremblay, "You better check yourself, before you wreck yourself."
