This raises questions concerning the effectiveness of legislation currently in place in those states with higher DUI-related fatalities and injuries each year. Here are a few stories of DUI incidents just this year.

Take the case of seven year old Katie Flynn, for example, killed on her way home from a wedding nearly five years ago. Her parents are strong advocates for public safety, and frequently speak at various functions and events that warn people about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. Their daughter and the driver of the vehicle were both killed due to the other driver's decision to drive under the influence. The other driver, apparently suffering few or no injuries, received a strict penalty of a minimum eighteen-year sentence for his actions.

Another story that is making headlines involves a young man, technically too young to be drinking, who accidentally struck and killed a woman, injuring another, after making the decision to drive under the influence after a major sporting event. His age did not play a significant factor in sentencing, but even this first time offender received a minimum seven-year sentence for his actions.

In another state, a woman faced the decision of how to plead to a charge of four counts of murder in the second degree when her decision to drive under the influence of alcohol turned deadly for four teenagers in another vehicle. She decided to plead no contest, which is much the same as pleading guilty in any state. The only difference is that this show of remorse will sometimes allow the judge to have some mercy during the sentencing phase of the trial. This tragic loss of life is so unnecessary, and such a sad turn of events in the lives of these young people and their families.

These are just a few of the thousands of stories taking place in the Unites States any given day of the year. It is tragic to consider this loss of life, especially when it could have been avoided so easily.
