Dull Smile? Fix It With A Teeth Whitening Procedure

As time passes, a variety of factors can cause your teeth to lose their original whiteness

. If you are unhappy with the coloring of your teeth, you may want to consider a teeth whitening procedure to get the bright smile that you want. Over the years, teeth whitening technology has advanced to the point where positive results are achieved by the great majority of people that undergo treatment. With a range of options available to fit any budget, there is a teeth whitening treatment available that can help you.

Over The Counter Whitening

The cheapest way to achieve whitening results is to purchase an over the counter product. Whitening gels, strips and toothpastes are readily available at most drug stores and are generally relatively cheap. However, these products generally contain a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide than dentist-approved methods and do not offer the same level of whitening. In addition, they are not specifically designed to fit your teeth like dentist-approved methods are. However, if you are not looking to spend a great deal of money or are only looking for some moderate whitening, an over the counter product could be the right option for you.

In-Office Whitening

The most efficient and effective way to whiten your teeth is to have the procedure performed by your dentist in a single appointment in his or her office. After deciding that an in-office procedure is your best option, your dentist will start the process by evenly applying a layer of whitening gel to the front of your teeth. After this, usually your dentist will shine a special light or laser onto the front of your teeth that will activate the hydrogen peroxide in the gel and speed up the whitening process. This process is then repeated several times to maximize the whitening you will receive. When this is complete, you will be free to leave the office and start enjoying your bright new smile. In total, the process will generally take between one and two hours.

Take Home Whitening Kits

Another popular option for patients and dentists is to use a take home whitening kit to whiten patients' teeth. If you choose this option, your dentist will begin by taking detailed impressions of your teeth. These impressions will then be used to create a set of customized whitening trays that will fit perfectly onto your teeth. When you are at home, you will apply whitening gel to the trays and wear them on your teeth for approximately one hour. After repeating this process every day for about two weeks, the process will be complete and your teeth will have gotten considerably whiter. Although take home whitening takes longer than in-office whitening, it is generally a significantly cheaper option.
