Durdle Door and the Jurassic Coast

The British Isles are perhaps unfairly ignored for their amazing natural scenic beauty

, but just one visit to the Durdle Door and the Jurassic Coast of the Wessex Coast in the south of England will almost certainly make you think again about holidaying abroad.

Durdle Door is instantly recognizable, you might not know it's name but chances are you've seen it used in many an adventure or mystery set on the coast.

Sighted in the chalk downs of Dorset it is neighbours with other fantastical named places as Bat's Head, Red Hole and the ominously named Man O'War Rocks, is a peninsula of steep cliffs made predominantly of the countries favourite building material of Portland Stone.

It is this stone that holds the fossils and evidence of a time long gone, giving it the name Jurassic coast. It is still, millions of years later, possible to see the makes and holes left by Jurassic trees, quite a spectacular history.

One great way to visit this area is to take your own transport, there are many campsites open year round in the area and by making a study of what is available you can easily have an enjoyable holiday exploring more of this fantastic setting that is possible by being based in one location.

This coast is prone to rough weather, so bearing that in mind you might want to take good note of the seasonal changes, although safe and dry inside a motorhome with a hot cup of it doesn't matter what the elements throw at you.

It's a lovely part of the world to watch from the comfort of your own hotel, there is a lot of sea to watch.
