Built in 1555 by the Portuguese, the Mattancherry was the gift to Veera Kerala Varma the Raja of Kochi. The gift was a token of goodwill from the Portuguese who were expecting profitable returns in the form of trade. The actual attraction here is not the designers or the renovators of the structure but rather the amazing murals within the premises which have been well preserved through several centuries. Captivating scenes from the legends of Mahabharata, Ramayana and Puranic adorn its walls. The Palace also showcases portraits of Maharajas with samples of their bejewelled clothing boasting the opulence of the Kerala State. The intricate carvings on the ceilings also show the craftsmanship and innovativeness of Cochin. Visitors may look out for the frescoes adorning the Coronation Hall. Located on the second floor this Hall's frescoes depict the ancient tales of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. There is also a massive wall area with paintings devoted to Tretayug, again depicting the adventures of Rama. These paintings are famous for the painting styles used - styles unique to Kerala, and one of the most interesting paintings to be displayed is Krishna with all eight gopis'. The Mattancherry is also the place to explore Nalukettu', the architecture style which is traditional to the region. But overall the architectural style of the structure is a mixture of Kerala and Dutch. The Palace also features a temple dedicated to Pazhayannur Bhagavati' the Royal Family's goddess. There are temples at this premises dedicated to Lords Krishna and Siva as well. Visitors to the city are afforded many other sights and attractions which are unique to the state.
