Dutch Reformed Church In Galle, A Historical Wonder
The picturesque Sri Lankan town of Galle was renowned even in years past as an important
port of call for seafaring traders who visited the island from as far away as Egypt. Over the centuries the town and its environs have been controlled by diverse seafaring nations like the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the British. Each of these conquering nations left its mark on the town of Galle and its environs, and one of the most important monuments left by the Dutch is the famed Dutch Reformed Church.
Christianity was initiated in the Netherlands in the 8th century, and during the upheavals of the Renaissance the influence of the ideas of Jean Calvin, the French theologian gained prominence in Christianity as it was practiced in the Netherlands.
Controversially his theories emphasized a love of gain which provided an impetus to the commercial drive of the Netherlands, including the activities of Dutch maritime traders. These factors led to the creation of the True Dutch Reformed Church and the United Dutch East India Company. On the trading vessels of the latter several clerics were present to carry out religious functions. After the 1602 charter it was these clerics who were given the responsibility of propagating Christianity in the East.
The Dutch East India Trading Company established Galles Dutch Reformed Church in 1642. The churchs distinctive architecture with its lofty ceilings gives it prominence among the buildings of the area. It is said that the floors of the building were paved with the tombstones from the old Dutch cemetery. The building which stands today dates to the period 1752-1755 when the church was reconstructed after sustaining damage. The church features an organ which is 250 years old and a pulpit constructed with Malaysian calamander wood. Lovely stained glass can be seen in the church windows. Every Sunday services are still conducted at the church.
Many age-old legends surrounding the church add to its mystique. It is said that at one time there were hidden tunnels that led to important sites in the town, including the Governors house.
