Dutch Sailing Girl Laura still sailing around the world
The Dutch Sailing girl Laura Dekker, who was in the media last year for her idea
to be the youngest sailor ever to sail non-stop around the world, is still going. At the beginning of November she will continue her trip around the world.
The Dutch Sailing girl Laura Dekker has gotten a lot of media attention last year for her idea to be the youngest solo sailor to sail around the world. Her father supported her idea, but childhood services started wanted to prevent her from doing so. According to childhood services she was too young to undertake such a big trip by herself and they were unsure about her mental state. Other factors where problems with schooling, which is obligated until someone reaches the age of 16 in the Netherlands.
Currently she is staying at the Canary Island for over a month. The next step in her trip is to sail from the Canary Island to the Cape Verde. This hold-up' is due to the fact that she wants to wait with crossing the Atlantic Ocean until the hurricane season is over. She says that she is well aware of what to do when she sails into a hurricane, but is not looking forward to it. So to able to skip it would be great.
She also states that she is not feeling lonely and has met a lot of people in the harbor she is now in. She even makes her homework every day. The company MasMedia has installed cameras on her boat for her trip across the Atlantic. The footage will be sold to any party who is willing to pay for it.
The current record of youngest solo sailor around the world is in hands of the Australian Jessica Watson. She finished her solo-trip a few days before she turned seventeen. Laura Dekker turns seventeen on September 12th 2010, which acts as a major deadline for her.
