could find itself in the position to open subsidiaries overseas. Is Great Plains Dynamics a good option for multinational company? What are the checkpoints in our decision making to select appropriate Corporate ERP platform? Lets try to answer initial questions and focus on Microsoft Dynamics GP formerly known as Great Plains:

Q. We use GP in our headquarters in Los Angeles and opening several offices in Argentina, Chile and Brazil. We have reasonable number of user licenses and ready to open client interface via Citrix application server. Should we expect something in implementing Great Plains for our offices in South America?

A. GP is localized in both Argentina and Chile as well as in most of Spanish speaking Latin America, including Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador just to open the list of countries. In Brazil however Microsoft Business Solutions offers Dynamics AX formerly popular by the name Axapta. If you need to report SPED (Public Digital Bookkeeping System) then you should compare Great Plains with AX and also probably such popular mid-market offer from SAP Business One

Q. We are commodity trading company and we do not really have concerns about such features as Chinese or Portuguese interface. GP is implemented in our headquarters in Chicago and we would like to deploy it for our subsidiaries in Japan, China, Russia and Brazil

A. In your situation Great Plains is a good choice as it has Multicurrency in most of the modules. We agree that your overseas location is not exposed to POS and Retail operations and such reporting requirements as SPED in Brazil or Standard Chart of Accounts in Russian Federation. Such Consolidated Financial Reporting instruments as Microsoft Management Reporter and FRx work with multicurrency and exchange rates entered directly in Great Plains. We have experience implementing Dynamics GP for trading companies with offices in major trading locations: London, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow and Paris

Q. Our primary focus in Brazil and China will be distribution to our franchisees. We are OK with English interface but we need to have several forms translated into Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese. Is it doable?

A. Yes. You should consider several techniques. Brazilian Portuguese is ASCII (one byte per character) compliant and Chinese requires Unicode (two bytes per hieroglyph). In Report Writer you can modify SOP Blank Invoice form and make text in Portuguese. If you need several reports and forms to be adopted for Brazil then job could be done in Modifier where you translate String resources (translated strings go into Forms.dic dictionary). Chinese language support is a bit more challenging. Our recommendation for reporting is Crystal Reports or SSRS (Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services). Entering Chinese text and saving it in GP is also a challenge as Dexterity (Great Plains architecture) doesnt support Unicode. However there is work around and we recommend you to look at NJ Star add-ons for Great Plains

Q. Our perspective is office in Dubai and we are looking to implement Great Plains there with limited Arabic language support. Is it something realistic?

A. Yes. There are several flavors of Great Plains add-ons in Arabic. We recommend you the one where String resources translated into Arabic in Modifier. You need customization site enabler license and it is additional cost but it is bullet proof and bugs free comparing to the version where Strings are translated in Dexterity (Dynamics.dic)
