Formerly this accounting and ERP system was known as Great Plains
. It was triumphing on ERP market in late 1990th and earlier 2000th. Being in consulting business since 1994 we would like to compile and answer FAQ related to Great Plains customizations. If your question is not found here please feel free to contact us separately. In this publication we do not pretend to be too technical and rather appealing to management and decision makers. Lets open FAQ section at this point:
Q. We have strong internal development team experienced in Visual Studio C# and VB. We have about fifty user licenses and need customization where about ten new tables need to be created. Can we rely on Visual Studio Tools?
A. To certain extend you probably can rely on VST. In order to be addressed user defined tables need to be created in Microsoft Dexterity. This statement might sound a bit strange. But lets take a look at meta-data dictionary where business logic is described Dynamics.dic. This dictionary has core tables specifications. When you introduce new table you use Dynamics.dic and extend it in Dexterity. Then you export your custom portion into Export.dic and create chunk file for distribution. At this point you are ready to address new table in VST
Q. In our situation we actually need integration with custom logic. When we import invoices from external application we need to alter document dates to be set to the beginning of the next month. We are producing text files from external database but this is UNIX box and we do not have control from there. Could you guide us?
A. We would like to recommend you Integration Manager module where you can use SOP document integration and VBA scripts. Please review before document commit event and try to change date in this script
Q. About five years ago we had Dexterity programmer to alter our system to adapt our requirements. Since then we never heard from this software developer and as we know he no longer works for the consulting company. Can we recover and upgrade our custom module?
A. There are nuances. Dexterity Sanscript code is stripped out in chunk file. So you should have access to so-called source code which is usually available in Dynamics.dic or Export.dic used by developer. Good idea is to call your original consulting company and ask if they have source code. They probably should be happy to give it to you free or for small fee
Q. We are coding integration with external database (ecommerce shopping cart) in eConnect (MS Visual Studio C# Web Service). Our goal is to do all the jobs in ecommerce portal but we discovered that eConnect doesnt provide SOP Invoice batch posting functionality. Could you recommend work around?
A. You are right as eConnect is similar to Integration Manager and it allows you to create so-called work documents and place them into the batch. Then documents should be reviewed, approved and posted by GP user likely in the position of sales manager. There is work around in the form of Alba Spectrum Posting Server
Q. We need Great Plains table structure and we are not sure where to get it
A. Try Tools -> Resource Description -> Tables
Q. We have our old Dex chunk file which was developed for version 7.5. We plan to update to version 2010 and we are wondering if we can use the same chunk file
A. The answer depends on the technologies deployed by programmer in time. If he or she used Dexterity triggers and didnt modify forms then there is a possibility that old chunk file is compatible with release 2010
Q. It looks like our alteration was done in add-on known as eOne Extender. We lost our relations with original consulting firm. Is it possible for us to move one and update to version 2012?
A. Extender seems to be neutral to version upgrades as it just extends and doesnt modify existing logic. We have experience of moving customer from Small Business Financials to Dynamics GP Business Ready Business Essentials where Extender customization was able to work without code review
Q. We prefer local consultants to do coding job sitting in our office. Are your available in Minnesota?
A. Please think about software development factory approach. Programmers have to have workload and serve their customers via web session and phone conferences. There is no need for programmer to commute to your office
