Dynamics Gp Modifier Module Or Simple Way To Change Forms

There are numerous customization and programming tools for Microsoft Dynamics GP formerly also known as Great Plains

. Lets name Dexterity, Visual Studio Tools, Extender and famous eConnect SDK. All the above require experience and the project itself may take some time for preparation and coding. But what if we just need to place couple of new fields on the screen as well as change position of core objects? Well this is what Modifier is for. Before you can use it you need license (customization site enabler). Also this tool was introduced long time ago as scaled down Dexterity with VBA scripting. In order to distribute your modification you should take a look at Forms.dic as well as enable security for the user to use modified form. Every Dynamics GP consultant should be familiar with security model. Now lets take a look:

1.In client application open the window for example Sales Transaction Entry and on its menu follow: Tools -> Customize -> Modify Current Window. Take a look at your options here and try to place something like Push Button on this screen. In local field definition add static values (the name on the button for example OK). Go back to GP interface and reopen this window. Select Customize -> Add this Window to Visual Basic. At this point open Visual Basic Editor and expand on the left side Dynamics GP and you should see the form and its grid available for scripting

2.VBA coding is event driven and it is similar to what you can do in Excel, Microsoft Access or another VBA compliant application. Cool thing about this method is the fact that it supports debugging. In order to test yourself in programming please refer manuals and it is outside of the scope for this document

3.Taking care about security. It is in Setup -> System -> Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports in versions 10.0 and higher. In earlier releases such as 9.0, 8.0, 7.5 which might still be in production the model based on user ID or class. Lets assume that you are on 2010 here product GP and select Type as Windows. You should see Sales Transaction Entry expand it and switch radio button to Modified. When you are back opening this screen you should see your OK button and small dot on the top of the form prior to its name

4.Customization distribution. Please take a look at Dynamics.set file content. It has Forms.dic listed for the ID number 1. If we are talking about old method of so-called fat client application (versus new methods such as Citrix or thin client). One of the smart methods is to place Forms.dic on the server in mapped folder or via UNC Path and change the location in Set file accordingly. Another method is to distribute dictionary to each user computer

5.There might be questions about what else could be done in this tool. If you would like to translate Dynamics to foreign language than this also could be done in Modifier. This method in our opinion is more elegant, comparing to opening Dynamics.dic dictionary in Dexterity and doing the same there. We know customers who were able to translate string resources to Arabic, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese (the language should be ASCII compliant one byte per character as the tool doesnt support Unicode or in other words hieroglyphs such as in Chinese). It could be done but we do not really recommend you to rush into such translation projects as in such countries as Brazil we have complex reporting (SPED Public Digital Bookkeeping for example)
