E-Reader Buying Guide For Dummies Amazon Kindle Vs Sony Ereader

The E-Reader was introduced some time ago, but more recently models from Sony and Amazon have been launched and are proving to be extremely popular with readers around the world. Analysts estimate over 2 million E-Readers were sold in 2009 and the Consumer Electronics Association predicts this will double in 2010 and could peak at around 30 million units sold in 2014. It has also been suggested that the growth in sales of E-Readers could slow sales of netbooks and laptops, due to their wi-fi capabilities and portability.

The Amazon Kindle currently controls 45% of the market with Sony close behind with 30%.

The Amazon Kindle has been one of the most successful E-Readers so far, along with the Sony Pocket Edition and Sony Touch Edition E-Reader. They offer the following features:

Some of the features provided with E-Readers are very appealing along with being eco-friendly by dramatically reducing paper consumption and therefore helping the environment which is of high importance in today's modern world. Students and business users alike have been impressed with storage capacity of the E-Reader which reduces the amount of heavy books they need to carry. The Apple iPhone has articles available to read which interests many users and as more and more consumers are choosing to own electronic devices, the E-Reader stands in good steed to becoming a necessity for a wider market as it becomes a mainstream consumer electronic device.

How it works: The E-Reader works by displaying text stored on large internal or expandable memory. Electronic versions of books (ebooks) and other information can be purchased on line and is then transferred via wi-fi/3G mobile networks or by sycning with a PC via USB. At present, there are limited options of where ebooks can be purchased, but as the market grows this will change. Plastic Logic launched a E-Reader model with a plastic flexible matrix which provides the ability for the E-Reader to bend as a book would. The Plastic Logic Que Book's screen is robust and glare-free and is set to be very popular due to it's flexibility and the fact that it is less likely to break than an LED glass screen used in most E-Readers. Other contributers to the E-Reader market include Samsung, Notion Ink and eBooks. The Apple iPad has been the centre of attention for some time now, but we don't class it as a full E-reader its more of a portable multi media device.
