The e-discovery software that is available is used to retrieve information from computers that are owned by a company. There are occasional legal implications and situations that require the information that is stored on computers. E-discovery software can retrieve information even if it has been deleted.

E-discovery is important because without a record of the changes that have been made on the computer there might be difficulty in proving the allegations of one side of the lawsuit. For this reason, there are many laws that specifically require employers to track all information that is on any computer used by their employees and maintain that information in order to have it accessible for future legal use.

The information that has been stored on the computer can be retrieved via e-discovery software and a trained forensic investigator. This is a person who has been trained and certified in electronic discovery. This training requires a substantial amount of training and experience.

When electronic information has been improperly stored or has been lost there can be legal implications. This is why there are many laws designed to make it unpleasant for companies to have improper records of their electronic information. As a result, companies have to maintain documentation on the information that is created and stored on their computer equipment and increased software options for doing so.
